This week Year 3 had a very exciting visit from an Earthquakes and Volcanoes workshop.
They learned what to do if there was an Earthquake but also how it varies depending on the magnitude of the quake. They also learned why Earthquakes happen and which countries seem to have the most due to the movement of the tectonic plates under the Earth’s surface.
We were taught that in the past people believed that Earthquakes and volcanoes were not known in the way we know now, thanks to scientific research. In the past they made up stories of cows balancing the Earth on their horns and shaking causing an Earthquake or a whale flapping its tale causing a Tsunami.
The children enjoyed taking part in lots of games which helped them remember the layers of the Earth’s core, quizzes with questions such as what speed does a tsunami travel at its fastest? And drama activities where they acted out the stories from the past that people believed and were reports at the scene of areas where an Earthquake or volcano occurred. The children loved listening to the number of people affected and used lots of these details in their reports.
It’s been such a busy week, please enjoy our photos to see what we have been learning about.
